The Boston Red Sox have some noticeable gaps in their roster, leading to increased speculation about potential acquisitions. This winter, they need to add one or two right-handed hitters. Even if they bring back Tyler O’Neill in free agency, they will still require an additional right-handed bat. Several good options will be available, including Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman, who has been mentioned as a possible target.
Bregman is expected to be one of the top players on the market, and there’s talk of him potentially shifting to second base to broaden his appeal. However, at nearly 31 years old before the start of the 2025 season, he comes with a hefty price tag.
Former Red Sox player Will Middlebrooks cautioned against pursuing Bregman during an appearance on NESN’s “Sox Talk With Will Middlebrooks.” He raised concerns about the financial implications, saying, “Is Bregman really worth $200 million? He’ll be 31—how can you justify that? It’s not my money, but do you really want to sign a deal where you’re stuck with the final years when he’s 37, 38, or 39? What can you expect from him at that age? Probably not a strong third baseman.”
Middlebrooks expressed enthusiasm for Bregman if the deal is right, but warned against overcommitting financially or in terms of contract length. Bregman will certainly be a key player to monitor in the coming months.
