The St. Louis Cardinals appear to be entering a rebuilding phase, having already allowed Paul Goldschmidt to leave in free agency. Another major player, Nolan Arenado, could also be on the move.
Arenado could fetch a significant return, with many playoff-contending teams interested in him. Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer suggested a trade sending Arenado to the Boston Red Sox:
Cardinals receive: second baseman Vaughn Grissom and infielder Mikey Romero
Red Sox receive: third baseman Nolan Arenado
Arenado has agreed to waive his no-trade clause for six teams, including the Red Sox. After signing an eight-year, $260 million contract with the Colorado Rockies in 2019, Arenado was traded to the Cardinals. The Cardinals may need to absorb part of his contract to facilitate the deal, but in return, they would receive Boston’s No. 12 prospect.
Acquiring Arenado would allow the Red Sox to shift Rafael Devers to first base, making it easier to trade Triston Casas. Rymer noted that while moving Devers is a bold move, it may be the right time for the team to transition him to first.
Arenado, an eight-time All-Star, five-time Silver Slugger, 10-time Gold Glover, and six-time Platinum Glover, is regarded as one of the best players of his era. He hit .272 with 16 home runs for the Cardinals last season and would be a valuable addition to the Red Sox lineup.
