Broncos land massive deal for 25-year-old 49ers standout safety

According to Mike Klis of 9NEWS Denver, the Denver Broncos have reached an agreement with former 49ers safety. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that it’s a three-year deal worth $45 million, with $20 million guaranteed.

The  25-year-old safety who previously played for the 49ers, was a first-team All-Pro in 2022. However, he has faced injury setbacks, including an ACL tear in 2023. He returned last season but was limited to just 7 games due to a wrist injury. Now fully recovered, He is set to join the Denver Broncos’ defense.

Over his four seasons with the 49ers, Hufanga played in 49 games, starting 37 of them. He amassed 219 tackles, 9 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, 14 pass deflections, 7 interceptions, 2 forced fumbles, and 1 defensive touchdown.

What Happened to Talanoa Hufanga? NFL Injury Update

With Hufanga now signed, he’ll fill the starting safety spot previously held by P.J. Locke, who struggled last season, especially during the Broncos’ wildcard loss to the Bills. Locke could be cut soon to help clear cap space.

While Hufanga’s injury history is a concern, the Broncos have been one of the healthier teams in recent years. With Beau Lowry’s expertise in keeping players healthy, Hufanga may thrive in Denver. His contract has relatively low guarantees, which helps protect the Broncos if injuries resurface.

Overall, this is a strong move for the Broncos. Hufanga is a highly talented player when healthy and was a key part of the 49ers’ defense. At just 25 years old, if he can stay injury-free, he could make a significant impact on the Broncos’ defense.
