The 27-year-old has had a relatively quiet season in the NHL, registering only two goals and three assists in 19 games. However, he has been much more productive in the AHL with the Coachella Valley Firebirds, where he has scored 11 goals and tallied 25 points in 19 games.
Throughout his career, he has accumulated 87 goals and 77 assists, totaling 164 points in 363 NHL games.
He was selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round, 46th overall, during the 2015 NHL Draft.
Sprong will now be joining his third team of the 2024-25 season. He initially signed with the Vancouver Canucks during the offseason but was later traded back to his former team, the Seattle Kraken. Having experienced success with the Kraken in the past, it seemed like a logical move to bring him back in hopes of rekindling that spark. However, Sprong only played 10 games with the Kraken, recording one goal and one assist.

Now, he’s headed to New Jersey, where the Devils are in the midst of a playoff race. Currently sitting third in the Metropolitan Division, the Devils have faced a challenge with the significant injury to star player Jack Hughes, leading fans and the media to question their next steps. In response, New Jersey made several moves before the trade deadline, including acquiring forward Cody Glass and defenseman Dennis Cholowski. While they may have missed out on bigger names like Mikko Rantanen, the Devils remained determined to stay competitive and solidify their depth for a playoff push. If Sprong can replicate the production he had from 2022 to 2024, he could become a key contributor for the Devils as they make their run toward the postseason.
