It seems that the Red Sox will have the chance to make their pitch to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. if they want to bring the superstar slugger to Boston.
ESPN’s Jeff Passan on Tuesday morning reported Guerrero and the Blue Jays did not reach an agreement on a contract extension by the Monday night deadline the sides established. According to Passan, the four-time All-Star “does not plan to negotiate” a potential extension in-season, which sets the stage for Guerrero to hit free agency after the 2025 campaign.
This development could be promising for the Red Sox, as the 25-year-old Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is reportedly eager to play for them if he decides to leave Toronto. Boston is said to be a big admirer of Guerrero’s abilities, and last month, a top MLB insider suggested that Craig Breslow and the team would have a strong chance of acquiring the power-hitting first baseman if he becomes available.

How strong is that chance? Another MLB insider noted last month that the Red Sox were hesitant to pursue Alex Bregman because they were planning an aggressive push for Guerrero. While Bregman eventually joined the team on a three-year deal, that shouldn’t rule out Boston’s pursuit of Guerrero this offseason.
Though there isn’t an immediate perfect fit for Guerrero on the Red Sox roster, the potential for him to make an impact at Fenway Park makes it a move the team should definitely consider when the opportunity arises.
