Massive blow: Penn State receive bad news involving super talent

Penn State star expected to be a key part of the Nittany Lions’ rotation, will miss the 2025 season due to Tommy John surgery.

Last season, he posted a 2-3 record with a 7.65 ERA, starting nine games and making 13 appearances for Penn State. Prior to joining the Nittany Lions, he spent two seasons at Division II Southern New Hampshire University, where he recorded an 8-1 record and a 2.44 ERA in 2023 with the Penmen.

The announcement was made earlier today on X, with the information coming from an interview with Penn State head coach Mike Gambino on the Truck Stop Baseball podcast, hosted by college baseball personality Noah Darling on Spotify.

With Sanchez’s absence, sophomore left-handed pitcher Matt Morash is expected to take his place in the rotation. Morash, who struck out 26 batters in 18 appearances last season, impressed with four scoreless innings in the Big Ten semifinal win over Michigan, helping Penn State reach the conference championship game.

Morash may not go deep into games initially, but that’s less of a concern given the significant depth added to the Penn State bullpen over the offseason. New additions include lefties Logan Olson and Zach Mizrahi, and righties Skip Shenosky and Dimond Loosli.

The bullpen also welcomes freshman right-handers Sean Williams, Riley Weatherwax, and Matthew VanOstenbridge, along with left-hander Charles Mau, who joins from North Allegheny High School in Pennsylvania.

While Sanchez’s injury is a setback for the Nittany Lions, the team has ample depth to fill the void. With 13 pitchers joining from the transfer portal and the Class of 2024, Penn State has plenty of options to step up.
