As Penn State’s football team aims to excel in recruiting, they are still working to bounce back from their College Football Playoff defeat to Notre Dame in the semifinals. A key step in their recovery was hiring Jim Knowles as their defensive coordinator, who shares his thoughts on the program’s potential to win a championship in the near future.
Knowles served as the defensive coordinator for the Ohio State Buckeyes from 2022 to 2024 and now brings his expertise to Pennsylvania to lead the Nittany Lions’ defense. He has outlined two key goals for his time at the university—goals that, according to NBC Sports, are sure to excite fans as they look ahead to the upcoming season.

“I have one aspiration,” Knowles said. “I’m at that point in my career where you focus solely on the job at hand, and my aspiration is to help Penn State win the national championship and be the No. 1 defense in the country — and that’s really all I’m focused on. That’s not just talk. That’s the truth. I don’t have any aspirations beyond that.”
Undoubtedly, Knowles understands what it takes to win a national championship, having been part of the Ohio State team that claimed the title this past season. Now, he joins head coach James Franklin’s staff with the goal of helping bring a championship to Penn State. The Nittany Lions’ last national title came in 1986, and they are eager to change that.
