The Toronto Blue Jays made their most significant move in free agency by signing Anthony Santander. While they remain in the running for Pete Alonso, there may be a more suitable option available.
Alex Bregman is still a free agent, and with the Houston Astros trading Ryan Pressly, it’s possible Bregman could remain in Houston. However, ESPN’s David Schoenfield pointed out that Bregman might actually be a better fit for the Blue Jays than Alonso, highlighting reasons why teams should pursue Bregman.
“Third base is occupied by Ernie Clement, a career journeyman who had a 3.4-WAR season in 2024 at age 28 — thanks, in large part, to some excellent defensive metrics at third base and shortstop,” wrote Schoenfield. “Though Clement has elite contact ability, he pairs that with poor swing decisions and low hard-hit rates. He works best as a utility player, and Bregman fits the roster better than Pete Alonso, another free agent the Jays are pursuing — but one who would force Guerrero to move to third base … which isn’t the brightest idea.”

While Alonso is undoubtedly a more powerful hitter than Bregman, the latter brings Gold Glove defense at third base and consistent offensive production. Bregman has a career .272 batting average and 191 home runs.
In 2024, Bregman hit 26 home runs and drove in 75 RBIs. He’s a two-time All-Star, Gold Glove winner, and Silver Slugger. Unlike Alonso, Bregman wouldn’t require the Blue Jays to shift Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to a different position and would come at a lower cost. Spotrac forecasts Bregman to sign a four-year, $119 million contract.
Schoenfield pointed out that the Blue Jays have reportedly extended a six-year offer to Bregman.
