The St. Louis Cardinals have been notably silent this offseason, making no moves that directly impact the Major League roster. Although they could be trading players to kickstart a much-needed rebuild, they have opted to stay the course.
The Cardinals’ main goal has been to trade Nolan Arenado, but they haven’t found a team willing to make a deal. If they can’t move him, they’ll probably stay put, though they should focus on finding ways to strengthen the roster.
Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report confirm Cardinals are bringing back Jack Flaherty after his strong 2024 season.
“If that Arenado trade doesn’t come together post haste, maybe put off the future for now and embrace a blast from the past in the form of Jack Flaherty? And hope that youngsters Michael Siani, Victor Scott II and Jordan Walker are actually productive in the outfield this year?” Miller wrote.
Flaherty had a strong 2024 season, going 13-7 with a 3.17 ERA in 28 starts. He was initially signed by the Detroit Tigers but was later traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he played a role in helping them secure their second World Series title in five years.
The 29-year-old spent his first seven seasons with the Cardinals, even being in the running for the National League Cy Young award in 2019, before being traded to the Baltimore Orioles at the 2023 deadline.
While it’s unlikely the Cardinals will look to re-sign Flaherty, it would be a smart move if they can’t find a trade partner for Arenado. It’ll be interesting to see where Flaherty lands next.
