LATEST: Padres confirm to add treasured efficient power-hitter to their ranks

The San Diego Padres have the opportunity to bring in a powerful and efficient hitter for the 2025 MLB season.

Motorcycle Sports’ Henry Martin reported that the Padres are interested in star free agent J.D. Martinez, saying:

“The San Diego Padres, a team with a vacuum in the designated hitter (DH) position last season, are eyeing Martinez as a strategic addition to their roster. With key players like Manny Machado shouldering sporadic appearances as DH, the Padres lack a consistent powerhouse in that role,” Martin wrote.

“Martinez’s acquisition could prove pivotal for the Padres, offering a cost-effective solution to their DH conundrum. As a three-time American League Silver Slugger, Martinez brings a wealth of experience and a potent bat that could bolster San Diego’s offensive lineup.”

NY Mets: What to expect from Mets usage of J.D. Martinez after arrival

Martinez could hit for power & average for the Padres in 2025

Martinez has been a standout hitter throughout his career, hitting 30 or more home runs five times and boasting a solid .283 career batting average over 14 seasons in the Majors. In 2024, the Florida native belted 16 home runs and drove in 69 RBIs in 120 games for the New York Mets.

However, just the previous year, Martinez posted impressive numbers with the Los Angeles Dodgers, recording 33 home runs, 103 RBIs, a .271 batting average, and a .893 OPS. If he can return to that form from 2023, he would provide a powerful addition to the Padres’ already talented lineup.

After coming off a one-year, $12 million contract, the 37-year-old slugger could likely be signed for an eight-figure or lower deal. San Diego would have the opportunity to lock him in at their designated hitter position, which had been handled by committee last season. Despite his age, Martinez could be a valuable short-term investment, as he still seems to have plenty of baseball left in him.
