The Toronto Blue Jays may consider trading their star infielder before he becomes a free agent next offseason. Spotrac predicts he could sign a $427 million contract when he enters free agency next winter. The San Diego Padres made the decision to trade their superstar Juan Soto to the New York Yankees before his walk year, a move that ultimately benefited the Padres, as the Yankees lost Soto to free agency. Now, the Blue Jays might follow a similar strategy and trade their own star player. Cody Williams from FanSided recently identified the Boston Red Sox as the leading candidates to acquire Guerrero if the Blue Jays decide to trade him.
“As the future of Vladimir Guerrero has consistently shifted toward being played out somewhere other than Toronto, a Blue Jays rival in the Boston Red Sox have been the most consistently mentioned favorite to land him in free agency,” Williams wrote. “When you look at Boston’s massive need for a right-handed bat, their potential willingness to move Triston Casas or at least shuffle things around with him and Rafael Devers, or even their potential to upgrade from Masataka Yoshida at DH, the Red Sox remain the biggest threat for Vladdy if Atkins and the Blue Jays can be talked out of their unwise stubbornness.”
Although the Boston Red Sox are division rivals of the Blue Jays, they are still seen as the most logical trade partner. Boston not only has a need for a player like Guerrero, but they also possess several valuable assets to make a deal happen. A trade built around Triston Casas, as noted by Williams, would provide the Blue Jays with a solid replacement for Guerrero, offering a more affordable option with a longer contract. Of course, the Red Sox would have to include additional top prospects to complete the trade, but the foundation for such a deal is in place.
