The Toronto Blue Jays have signed All-Star right-handed reliever to a reported three-year, $33 million contract, the team announced on Friday.
He was originally drafted by the Blue Jays in 2014 as the ninth overall pick, was traded to the Colorado Rockies in 2015 as part of the deal for Troy Tulowitzki. Now 32, Hoffman will strengthen the Blue Jays’ bullpen and potentially step into the closer role, following the departure of two-time All-Star Jordan Romano in November.
“We’re thrilled to add Jeff to our bullpen,” said Toronto general manager Ross Atkins in a statement. “His pitching repertoire, command, and ability to generate strikeouts against all kinds of hitters is top-tier, and he’ll certainly make us a better team. Jeff will have the chance to close games for us this season. His proven experience, competitiveness, and track record make him a great addition to our bullpen.”
Hoffman had an outstanding 2024 season with the Philadelphia Phillies, posting a 3-3 record, a 2.17 ERA, and 10 saves in 68 relief appearances. He struck out 89 batters while allowing 48 hits and 16 walks in 66.1 innings, earning his first All-Star selection. In 2023, Hoffman made 54 appearances, finishing with a 5-2 record and a 2.41 ERA, allowing just 29 hits in 52.1 innings.
Over his nine-year career, Hoffman has posted a 23-26 record with a 4.82 ERA in 256 appearances (50 starts) for the Colorado Rockies (2016-20), Cincinnati Reds (2021-22), and Phillies.
As part of the roster move, the Blue Jays designated right-hander Brett de Geus for assignment. De Geus, 27, has a 7.48 ERA in 60 career relief appearances with five teams, including two games with the Blue Jays last season.
