The Boston Red Sox are reportedly among the leading contenders in the pursuit of Nolan Arenado. The St. Louis Cardinals aim to trade the All-Star to alleviate his enormous contract, but his no-trade clause has complicated the situation. While the Red Sox are a logical fit, they are unlikely to absorb much of the money left on his deal, which has stalled any potential trade. Cody Williams of FanSided has proposed a plan that could make a deal for Arenado more feasible for the Red Sox. Williams suggests a blockbuster trade in which the Red Sox acquire both Arenado and Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley.
“Another report from Chris Cotillo and Sean McAdam of MassLive on Monday connected the Red Sox to the top-end bullpen arms, specifically Tanner Scott,” Williams wrote. “But if there’s a world in which Boston could not take on a huge amount of Arenado’s salary and also get closer Ryan Helsley to the Red Sox, that would make things a lot more palatable.”
If St. Louis is open to including Ryan Helsley in the trade, the Red Sox might be more inclined to take on over $40 million of Arenado’s remaining $52 million contract. In exchange, Boston could offer some of its top prospects to address two significant needs on their roster. This trade would be a logical move and could realistically happen. While there are no current reports suggesting that this deal is being actively discussed, it’s definitely something worth monitoring moving forward.
