The Boston Red Sox had been heavily connected to All-Star slugger Teoscar Hernández, but he won’t be joining the team in 2025.
Boston had been linked to Hernández for nearly a year, but he signed a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers before the 2024 season. Despite speculation about a possible deal with the Red Sox, that did not come to fruition, and Hernández re-signed with the Dodgers on Friday night.
With Hernández off the table, the Red Sox still need to add a powerful right-handed bat to their lineup. MLB.com’s Ian Browne suggested that former Houston Astros slugger Alex Bregman and St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado are now the top candidates.
“Hadn’t been hearing much about Teoscar Hernández in regards to the Red Sox, and now we know why,” Browne said. “He is back with the Dodgers on a three-year deal. Bregman (free agent) and Arenado (trade candidate) would seem top candidates to be Boston’s (right-handed) bat.”
Both players have been frequently linked to Boston but come with some logistical challenges. If the Red Sox were to add Bregman, he would likely need to switch positions and play second base. For Arenado, Boston would have to move either Rafael Devers off third base or Triston Casas off first base, requiring a trade. Bregman appears to be the more straightforward option at this point.
