South Carolina fans are hoping quarterback LaNorris Sellers will spend the rest of his college career in Columbia. However, given the current landscape of college football, there’s a chance he could leave early for the NFL, potentially leaving the Gamecocks without their star player.
With how well Sellers is performing, another year in college could benefit his development, and that’s likely to happen. But depending on his progression, he could be ready for the NFL after next season. If that happens, South Carolina would lose their starting quarterback and find themselves in a situation similar to before the 2024 season.
Fortunately, things aren’t as dire as they could be. Head coach Shane Beamer has secured one of the top young quarterbacks from the transfer portal. While he won’t be starting next season, his potential could be a valuable asset for the Gamecocks moving forward.
There are some uncertainties surrounding South Carolina’s decision to bring him in. The first major question is how he performs in actual game situations. He never saw the field at Ohio State, primarily because of the crowded quarterback room there, which ultimately led to his decision to transfer. Rather than competing for a starting role at Ohio State, where the competition seemed already settled, Noland opted to look for an opportunity elsewhere.
Another question revolves around Cutter Woods. South Carolina had signed Woods, a three-star quarterback, as part of their 2025 recruiting class, and with Robby Ashford entering the transfer portal, many had expected Woods to be the backup to LaNorris Sellers. However, this is a risky proposition for the Gamecocks.
While Noland has no game experience at Ohio State, he does have a year of college football under his belt—something Woods doesn’t have. Head coach Shane Beamer could have different plans for Woods in the future, but as things stand, Noland appears to be the most likely candidate to eventually succeed Sellers as the starting quarterback.
