BREAKING: ECU land blockbuster commitment for another top decorated player to bolster depth

East Carolina has strengthened its defensive line with the addition of Towson transfer, a Greenville native who began his college football journey at John Paul II High School before moving to the CAA. The talented player, who stands 6-foot-2 and weighs 315 pounds, redshirted in 2023 as a true freshman at Towson, before becoming a regular in the rotation for the Tigers’ seven-win season this year. Playing mostly as a nose tackle in Towson’s defensive scheme, he participated in 285 defensive snaps, recording seven tackles and one tackle for loss, according to Pro Football Focus.

He is the second defensive lineman to commit to East Carolina through the transfer portal this cycle and is expected to fill an interior defensive line role, capable of playing either nose tackle or defensive tackle. While it’s unclear how the defensive line will be structured under new defensive coordinator Josh Aldridge, former coordinator and now head coach Blake Harrell has typically deployed a three-down lineman look with a stand-up outside linebacker as the fourth player on the line since 2020.

Joining him in the defensive line room is Houston transfer Justin Benton, another interior defensive lineman who committed after his official visit earlier in the week. Roseborough visited East Carolina from Thursday into Friday before making his commitment.

He appeared in all 12 games for Towson this season, with his performance steadily improving as the year progressed. Pro Football Focus rated him with consecutive game grades of 70.6 against Hampton, 84.1 versus North Carolina A&T, and 78.3 against Campbell. He finished the season with a 62.0 overall defensive grade, including a 62.0 in run defense and a 65.2 pass rush grade. He also recorded seven quarterback pressures over 142 pass rush snaps.

Towson DL transfer Rion Roseborough, a native of Greenville, commits to East Carolina

In high school, Roseborough had a standout career at John Paul Catholic, which plays in an eight-man football league. He was a two-time Daily Reflector Boys’ Athlete of the Fall, rushing for 2,501 yards in 2022 and leading his team to the state title game for the third consecutive year. Roseborough also averaged 8.1 yards per carry and 192.4 yards per game, scoring 43 career touchdowns and registering two 2,000-yard seasons. In addition to his football accomplishments, he also competed in track and field, specializing in shot put and discus.

With Benton and Roseborough now part of the defensive line, East Carolina has secured six public commitments from transfers, including Western Carolina cornerback Jordy Lowery, Houston safety Teagan Wilk, wide receiver Jaquaize Pettaway, and long snapper Triston O’Brien.

East Carolina will conclude its 2024 season on December 28 against NC State in the Military Bowl.
