The transfer portal can be a double-edged sword—one day it offers great opportunities, and the next, it can be a source of disappointment. Just 48 hours ago, South Carolina secured the commitment of talented player, the Co-Defensive Player of the Year from the Southwestern Atlantic Conference, who transferred from Grambling. Now, he’s already committed to a different school.
The standout linebacker at Grambling, was one of the most sought-after players in the transfer portal, attracting interest from several programs in need of defensive help. For South Carolina, landing him was a significant win, especially after losing key players to graduation and the NFL, and given the team’s lack of depth at linebacker.
Despite his commitment to the Gamecocks, he had already planned an official visit to Ole Miss, an SEC rival. South Carolina fans were hopeful that his commitment would mean he was on track to join the team, but they knew there was no guarantee until he officially signed. Many expected he would visit Columbia first, before making any further decisions.
He only had one year of eligibility remaining, so his addition wasn’t going to provide a long-term solution. Still, it stings for South Carolina fans to see him transfer to a rival school, especially one that’s on the Gamecocks’ 2025 schedule.
With the top notch player now off the table, head coach Shane Beamer will have to dip into the portal once again to address the linebacker position, which is losing key contributors like Demtrius Knight Jr., Debo Williams, and Bam Martin-Scott to graduation, with some eyeing the NFL Draft.
The Gamecocks have been hit hard by both the transfer portal and NFL Draft declarations on both sides of the ball. However, their defensive depth remains a major concern, especially with just over two weeks left in the current portal window.
On the bright side, this isn’t the last opportunity for the Gamecocks to add talent before next season. The spring transfer portal window will open on April 16, 2025, and close on April 28, 2025, right in the middle of spring practices.
