After a slow start to the transfer portal, Virginia Tech football coach Brent Pry is seeing significant movement. The portal officially opened on Dec. 9, and while several Hokies have entered and committed elsewhere, it took some time for commitments to Virginia Tech to come in.
The first commitment came on Wednesday night when Clemson safety Sherrod Covil, Jr., a Virginia native, chose to return home for his final season of eligibility. Things picked up quickly on Friday. After Bowling Green running back Terion Stewart committed earlier in the day, two more commitments followed soon after.
On Friday, Virginia Tech secured three commitments through the portal. In addition to Stewart, Pry added two players to address key needs for the Hokies in 2025. Hampton defensive tackle Jahzari Priester, a 6-foot-6, 294-pound player with three years of eligibility remaining, committed in the afternoon. Priester, who began playing football in his senior year of high school, played 168 snaps in 11 games this season, including one start. While he provides depth to the defensive tackle position, he’s still a work in progress.
Shortly after, running back Marcellous Hawkins from Central Missouri committed, becoming the second running back of the day. Hawkins played in three games this season, but in 2023, he rushed for over 1,000 yards on 157 carries, scoring 18 touchdowns. Averaging 6.7 yards per carry, Hawkins, alongside Stewart, brings valuable experience to the Hokies’ running back room for 2025.
