BREAKING: Red Sox land lucrative deal for 28-year-old Angels gifted player to bolster depth

The Boston Red Sox have secured another starting pitcher, but it’s expected that their new acquisition won’t make his debut until the latter half of the 2025 season.

The 28-year-old  has reportedly signed a two-year, $18.25 million deal with the Red Sox, as confirmed by multiple sources on Friday.

He spent the first six seasons of his MLB career with the Los Angeles Angels. In June, the left-hander revealed that he had a torn ulnar collateral ligament and would need Tommy John surgery. As a result, he is expected to miss a large portion of the 2025 season before making his debut with the Red Sox.

The 28-year-old was the Angels’ Opening Day starter last year but struggled, finishing with a 2-8 record and a 5.08 ERA in 16 starts before undergoing surgery.

Patrick Sandoval set for World Baseball Classic

Although he was non-tendered by the Angels in November, Sandoval had a strong run from 2021 to 2023, posting a 16-28 record with a 3.53 ERA and 373 strikeouts over 380.1 innings. He also impressed during the 2023 World Baseball Classic, earning All-WBC honors after delivering a 1.23 ERA and eight strikeouts in key games against Japan and the U.S.

This offseason, the Red Sox have focused on strengthening their starting rotation. They added an All-Star pitcher earlier this month, but fans will have to be patient before seeing the impact of Sandoval’s signing.
