The Detroit Tigers have shown interest in signing free agent third baseman, adding to a competitive list of teams that includes the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, and Houston Astros. According to Sean McAdam of Mass Live, the Tigers are one of the top contenders for the 31-year-old, who has played his entire nine-season MLB career with the Astros.
The gifted player is coming off a strong 2024 season, in which he posted a .260 batting average, a .768 OPS, 26 home runs, and 75 RBIs. He also won his first Gold Glove, adding to his already impressive career that includes two World Series titles and two All-Star selections.
While the Tigers have shown clear interest in Bregman, they could face financial hurdles in pursuing the veteran third baseman. As Jon Heyman of the New York Post pointed out, Bregman might be too “expensive” for a Tigers team focused on building a competitive roster without exceeding its budget.
“The Tigers are interested in star free-agent 3B Alex Bregman, which would give him a chance to reunite with manager A.J. Hinch from their Houston days — and yes, the incumbent Astros are in with an offer,” Heyman wrote.
“Ultimately, Bregman might be pricey for Detroit,” Heyman concluded.
If Detroit succeeds in signing Bregman, it would bring a proven hitter and elite defender to their infield as part of their ongoing rebuild. However, with several other high-profile teams competing for his signature, the Tigers could face a tough challenge in securing him.
