The Montana Grizzlies’ season ended on Saturday afternoon, and less than 24 hours later, significant changes are being made to the UM roster.
Quarterback who shared starting duties with freshman Keali’i Ah Yat throughout the season, announced on Sunday afternoon that he would be entering the transfer portal. The gifted QB has one year of eligibility left.
“First and foremost, I’d like to thank God for the many blessings in my life and allowing me to continue to live out my dream,” He wrote on social media. “I’d like to thank my family and friends for the endless support through this journey. I’d also like to thank my teammates and the city of Missoula for welcoming me with open arms in this past year.
“With that being said, it is in my best interest to enter the transfer portal as a grad transfer with one year of eligibility remaining. I am extremely excited for what the future has in store.”
Fife and Ah Yat shared quarterback duties throughout the season for UM, a decision that often seemed confusing and appeared to disrupt the Grizzlies’ offensive rhythm, particularly as the team faced struggles on that side of the ball in the second half of the season. Head coach Bobby Hauck explained that their rotation was based on a “feel” approach, with the two quarterbacks alternating in and out.
These issues became particularly evident in crucial games towards the end of the season, as Montana suffered decisive losses to Big Sky Conference leaders UC Davis and Montana State heading into the playoffs. The team also struggled against other opponents, which contributed to UM’s difficulties and raised significant questions as the season came to an end.
After transferring to UM following four seasons at Fresno State, Fife started eight games for the Grizzlies, including matchups against UC Davis, Montana State, and UM’s first-round playoff game against Tennessee State.
Fife completed 167 of 263 passes for 1,890 yards, with 14 touchdowns and two interceptions. He also rushed for 135 yards and five additional touchdowns. His first start came against Eastern Washington on September 28, where he threw for 364 yards and five touchdowns, earning Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors.
However, after losing two fumbles and struggling in the game against Tennessee State, Fife was replaced by Ah Yat. From that point on, he did not play again on offense, including in UM’s second-round loss to South Dakota State on Saturday, as the Grizzlies finished with a 9-5 record.
Fife is the first known player from Montana to enter the transfer portal, which officially opens on Monday.
