The New York Mets aimed to strengthen their pitching staff over the offseason, but there are several ways to achieve this. It doesn’t necessarily require major trades or expensive free-agent deals worth hundreds of millions.
Sometimes, it’s the less obvious acquisitions that make a real impact, especially if the team has the resources to enhance the pitcher’s strengths and minimize his weaknesses.
While the Mets were focused on securing what could be the most significant free-agent signing in their history, they also made one of those overlooked trades that could significantly bolster their overall pitching depth.
“The Mets have announced that they have acquired RHP Sean Harney from the Rays in exchange for cash considerations,” SNY Mets posted on X.
Although the Mets didn’t have to give up a prospect to acquire Harney from the Rays, they did part with something valuable. According to reports, the transaction involved international bonus pool money. It’s likely that the funds came from their 2024 allocation, so it probably won’t impact their potential pursuit of Roki Sasaki if they choose to target him.
Who is the Mets’ newest hurler?
Harney is a 26-year-old right-handed pitcher who appeared at three different levels in 2024: the rookie-level Complex League, High-A, and Double-A. Over 40.2 innings, he posted a 3.54 ERA across these teams.
Drafted by the Rays in the eighth round of the 2022 MLB Draft, Harney has a career 3.91 ERA in the minors. The Mets likely have a plan for him, as his primary asset on the mound is a strong slider.
While he hasn’t reached Triple-A yet, so he may not be an immediate option for the Mets’ MLB roster, they will likely devise a strategy to maximize his potential.
