Last year, the Boston Red Sox promised a “full throttle” offseason but fell short of expectations. However, they may soon make up for it in a significant way. According to The Athletic, the team is now among the finalists to sign generational talent Juan Soto to a long-term deal as the bidding nears $600 million. They are competing with the New York Mets, New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, and Los Angeles Dodgers to secure the highly sought-after free agent. In his projections for the current free agent market, Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter predicted that the Red Sox would win the race by signing Soto to a 15-year, $675 million contract, with negotiations potentially wrapping up soon.
“All signs point to him making his decision some time between now and the conclusion of the annual winter meetings set to take place next week, and that should set off a flurry of secondary activity on the offseason market,” Reuter added.
While committing such a large sum to one player may seem risky, it’s hard to predict Juan Soto’s potential given his remarkable track record. At just 26 years old, Soto has already earned four All-Star selections, five Silver Slugger Awards, and received MVP votes in five different seasons. With a career .421 on-base percentage, he currently holds the highest in Major League Baseball. Soto just completed what could be considered his best offensive season yet, posting a .288/.419/.569 slash line with 41 home runs and 109 RBIs. Pairing him with star infielder Rafael Devers and a promising group of young talent from the Red Sox farm system would immediately position Boston as a serious contender for the World Series for the foreseeable future.
