The New York Mets fell just two wins short of reaching the World Series in 2024, with much of their unexpected success due to the strong performance of their starting rotation in the second half. With Sean Manaea, Jose Quintana, and Luis Severino set to hit free agency, president of baseball operations David Stearns faces a busy offseason. One possibility is a trade with the Chicago White Sox for All-Star pitcher Garrett Crochet. According to FanGraphs’ Roster Resource, the Mets’ current rotation includes Kodai Senga, David Peterson, Paul Blackburn, Tylor Megill, and José Buttó. Each of these pitchers comes with concerns for 2025, whether it be due to injuries, limited innings, or inconsistency. This likely explains why Stearns is focused on acquiring more than one starting pitcher this winter. While New York has been connected to several top free-agent arms, the trade market also presents promising options. Crochet, who posted a 3.58 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, and 209 strikeouts in 146 innings, stands out as a potential target. FanSided’s Josue De Jesus proposed a potential five-player trade for the left-hander.
– Mets receive: left-handed pitcher Garrett Crochet – White Sox receive: infielder/outfielder Jett Williams, outfielder Ryan Clifford, catcher Kevin Parada and right-handed pitcher Blade Tidwell
In this proposed trade, the Mets are sending a significant amount of talent to Chicago. MLB.com ranks all four of the players involved in the trade within the Mets’ top 25 prospects. Williams is New York’s second-best prospect, Clifford ranks fourth, Tidwell is eighth, and Parada is 25th. However, the White Sox hold some negotiating power in this scenario. According to Spotrac, Crochet’s market value for a long-term deal is six years and $130 million. Despite this, he has yet to sign an extension, and the White Sox aren’t in a rush to trade him due to his favorable contract situation. Crochet is expected to earn only $2.9 million in 2025 and is under team control through 2026.
