The MLB roster maneuvering season has officially begun, and the Red Sox initiated the process on Tuesday by designating veteran first baseman and right-handed pitcher for assignment, just hours before the deadline for teams to set their 40-man rosters ahead of next month’s Rule 5 Draft.
At the same time, Boston made a minor trade with the Rays, sending right-handed reliever Luis Guerrero to Tampa Bay in exchange for utility infielder Tristan Gray. Guerrero had been designated for assignment by the Red Sox on November 6, and Lowe’s roster spot was needed to add Gray.
The team also completed three additional trades: left-hander Brennan Bernardino was sent to the Rockies for Minor League outfielder Braiden Ward, lefty Chris Murphy was traded to the White Sox for Minor League catcher Ronny Hernandez, and Minor League right-hander Alex Hope was dealt to the Mariners for Minor League catcher Luke Heyman.
Meanwhile, left-handed pitcher Shane Drohan and right-handed pitchers David Sandlin and Tyler Uberstine were promoted from Triple-A Worcester to the Major League roster.
With MLB’s non-tender deadline approaching on Friday, Lowe was considered Boston’s top candidate to be non-tendered, but the team required his roster spot sooner.
Lowe had a brief stint with the Red Sox down the stretch in 2025 after being signed following his release from the Nationals.
