In recent days, numerous players across Major League Baseball have chosen to enter free agency—and the Philadelphia Phillies have been no exception.
Among them is veteran right-hander, who officially became a free agent after being traded to Philadelphia from the Detroit Tigers in July, just before the 2025 MLB trade deadline, according to the MiLB transaction log.
Manning was once considered a pitcher with tremendous potential. The Detroit Tigers selected him ninth overall in the 2016 MLB Draft, and he quickly rose through their farm system as one of baseball’s most highly regarded prospects. He made his major league debut with Detroit in 2021 and went on to make 50 starts over four seasons, posting a 4.43 ERA. His best campaign came in 2023, when he recorded a 3.58 ERA across 15 starts.
Manning joined the Phillies just before the trade deadline but was later designated for assignment to clear a roster spot for Walker Buehler. Afterward, he was outrighted to the minors, and now he’s set to test free agency in search of a new opportunity.
At only 27 years old, Manning still has time to reestablish himself, and it wouldn’t be surprising if another team takes a chance on his potential despite his decision to move on from the Phillies organization.
He didn’t appear in a big league game in general in 2025. Manning appeared in 31 games in the Tigers’ farm system, including four starts. He made just two appearances in the Phillies’ farm system down in Double-A.
