BREAKING: ‘This is sad’ Red Sox lose top-notch relief pitcher to free agency after solid season

The Boston Red Sox reached the postseason but were eliminated by the New York Yankees in the wild card round. With the season over, the team’s attention now turns to shaping the roster for next year.

The starting rotation proved to be reliable, with Garrett Crochet delivering an outstanding performance, while Brayan Bello and Lucas Giolito served as strong supporting pitchers. In the bullpen, Aroldis Chapman had an excellent All-Star season and secured a contract extension. Still, adding pitching depth remains a priority during the offseason.

Red Sox sign ex-Yankees reliever to minor league deal

One potential depth option, Nick Burdi, has chosen to enter free agency. Burdi appeared in four games for the Red Sox this year and played in 31 more at Triple-A Worcester. He closed out two games at the major league level, throwing 5 1/3 scoreless innings.

In Triple-A this season, Nick Burdi posted a 2.83 ERA with five saves over 35 innings. He originally debuted in 2018 with the Pittsburgh Pirates and has appeared in six MLB seasons, missing the entire 2021 campaign due to injury.

Over the course of his career, Burdi has also suited up for the Chicago Cubs and New York Yankees. Last year, he was impressive with a 1.86 ERA across 12 appearances for the Yankees, and a 2.65 ERA at Triple-A. These back-to-back strong seasons at both the minor and major league levels have helped re-establish his value.

Now electing free agency, Burdi is likely seeking an opportunity where he has a clearer path to contributing at the major league level. With the Red Sox, his chances of making the big league roster would have depended on injuries, so a move elsewhere could offer a more immediate role.
