Reds Rocked by Shocking Injury News — Star Pitcher Out for the Season

Cincinnati Reds relief pitcher will miss the remainder of the 2025 season after undergoing surgery to address a significant shoulder injury. According to MLB.com’s Mark Sheldon, Gibaut recently had a procedure to repair a torn labrum and to reattach his biceps tendon to his upper arm—an operation that typically requires a lengthy recovery timeline.

Gibaut had been on a rehab assignment earlier this month but was shut down in August due to continued discomfort. The decision to move forward with surgery was made shortly thereafter.

Ian Gibaut secures the save

The 31-year-old right-hander appeared in 25 games for Cincinnati this season, posting a 4.62 ERA with 24 strikeouts over 25.1 innings of work. Known for his durability and ability to eat innings out of the bullpen, Gibaut had been a key piece of the Reds’ relief corps over the last several seasons. Since joining the club, he has pitched in 134 games across four years, offering consistent middle-relief support.

His absence will be a blow to a Reds bullpen that has already endured several injuries this season. Cincinnati is currently in the thick of the National League Wild Card race, sitting at 67-61 and just one game behind the New York Mets for the third and final Wild Card spot. With 34 games remaining, every bullpen arm is critical as the Reds push for their first postseason berth since 2023.
