The Philadelphia Phillies have been seeking a closer since the start of the year. Jordan Romano’s recent struggles have only intensified their need, prompting the team to focus on bolstering their bullpen. Despite having several potential options, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that one of their primary trade targets is unlikely to be moved.

“The Cleveland Guardians are telling teams they plan to keep closer Emmanuel Clase,” Nightengale writes, “Who still is under team control through 2028.”
If the Guardians decide to trade Clase, the Phillies would be one of the prime destinations. They have the right assets to pull off a trade, and with their urgent bullpen needs, they have plenty of motivation to make a move.
Clase is under team control through 2028 with a very affordable salary of \$10 million per season in 2027 and 2028. Coming off a stellar 0.61 ERA and 47 saves in 2024, where he finished third in AL Cy Young voting, he’s been one of the game’s best.
Though not as dominant this year, Clase has still been impressive with a 2.86 ERA, 44 strikeouts, and 21 saves over 44 innings pitched. He wasn’t an All-Star in 2025, but he’s been elite over the last month, posting a remarkable stretch. In his last 13 appearances since June 17th, he’s allowed just one earned run, showcasing a level of dominance that makes him an attractive target for teams like the Phillies. His late-season form could be a game-changer for any bullpen.
However, this update puts a halt to any potential Clase-to-Phillies trade discussions. The All-Star closer would’ve been the perfect addition, but now the Phillies will have to explore other options.
