The St. Louis Cardinals have exceeded expectations so far this season. Despite being expected to rebuild, they’ve posted a solid 51-46 record at the All-Star break and are just 1.5 games away from the final National League Wild Card spot.
However, their strategy heading into the trade deadline remains uncertain. It’s unclear whether they’ll opt to buy, sell, or perhaps do a bit of both.
If they choose to sell, one of their top trade assets is closer Ryan Helsley. Matt Johnson of Sportsnaut recently named Helsley as a prime trade candidate, suggesting that the Cardinals may ultimately move him to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
“The St. Louis Cardinals will likely be receptive to moving Ryan Helsley in a contract year, especially since re-signing him is unlikely. The 30-year-old would provide Dodgers manager Dave Roberts with another late-inning option and would allow for Los Angeles to use its bullpen even more in October,” Johnson wrote.
Ryan Helsley had an impressive 2024 season, setting a Cardinals franchise record with 49 saves and earning NL Reliever of the Year honors while posting a 2.04 ERA.
This year, he’s continued to be a reliable asset, going 3-1 with a 3.27 ERA in 33 appearances, along with 19 saves. While the Cardinals opted to hold onto Helsley over the offseason, the trade deadline could offer them an opportunity to maximize his value.
By trading him, St. Louis could further replenish its farm system, especially with a focus on young pitching to build for the future. Helsley, a free agent at the end of the season, likely won’t return to the Cardinals, making him an even more attractive trade piece.
The real question is whether the Cardinals will finally make a definitive move at the deadline—whether that’s committing to a rebuild or pushing for a postseason run.
