The Miami Marlins are likely to be active in the trade market before the MLB deadline, despite their recent strong performances. Could they pull off another deal with the Philadelphia Phillies?
It’s worth noting that the Marlins traded Jesus Luzardo to the Phillies in the offseason, indicating they’re open to making deals with their NL East competitors.
Kevin Barral and Sean McCormack from Fish on First believe the Marlins and Phillies could strike another deal before the July 31 trade deadline. They suggest Miami could send relievers Anthony Bender and Calvin Faucher to Philadelphia in exchange for young pitcher.
“The Phillies currently rank 24th in bullpen ERA and they already know veteran lefty José Alvarado will be ineligible for the postseason due to a PED suspension,” Barral and McCormack wrote. “They could use the services of multiple high-leverage arms. Through 38 appearances, Anthony Bender has posted a 2.13 ERA, 4.06 FIP, 6.6 K/9 and 3.8 BB/9. As for Calvin Faucher, he’s posted a 4.18 ERA, 3.71 FIP, 8.4 K/9 and 4.2 BB/9 through 36 appearances.”
Mick Abel, once a highly touted prospect in the Phillies’ system, made his MLB debut this season, going 2-2 with a 5.04 ERA over six starts. In 25 innings, he’s given up 25 hits, struck out 21 batters, and walked 9.
Abel was drafted 15th overall by Philadelphia in the 2020 MLB Draft and posted a 4.44 ERA over four years in the minors, with an impressive 10.7 K/9 rate. His standout performance came before his promotion this year, as he went 6-2 with a 2.57 ERA in Triple-A.
With Miami’s strong bullpen depth, they’re likely to generate significant interest in some of their relievers, which could help them land a solid return and strengthen their farm system ahead of the deadline. It’ll be interesting to see if the Marlins capitalize on their assets and make a move before July 31.
