After Chase Burns recorded only one out last night, the Cincinnati Reds had to rely heavily on their bullpen to cover the innings. Today, they made roster moves to bring fresh arms to Boston in case more innings need to be covered. The team is calling up right-handed pitcher and left-handed reliever from Triple-A, while designating lefty reliever Joe La Sorsa and righty reliever Connor Phillips for removal from the roster.
To make room for Benschoter, the Reds added him to the 40-man roster, a spot that became available after they designated Jeimer Candelario for assignment. Benschoter – pronounced “Ben-scooter” – was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2021 out of Michigan State. He has experience both as a starter and reliever, although over the past two seasons, he has primarily worked in long relief.

This year, the 27-year-old has spent the entire season at Triple-A Louisville, where he’s made four starts and 17 relief appearances. He holds a 4-2 record with a 4.06 ERA, tossing 51 innings with 13 walks and 44 strikeouts. Benschoter has been more effective against right-handed hitters (.627 OPS) than lefties (.779 OPS).
Benschoter is known for throwing strikes, though he doesn’t generate a lot of swings and misses. He utilizes a five-pitch mix, including both a 4-seam and 2-seam fastball, along with a slider, curveball, and splitter. However, the slider and curveball are infrequently used, each accounting for only about 5% of his pitches this season. His fastballs are averaging 93.4 and 92.8 MPH in 2025 while with the Bats.
Left-handed reliever Sam Moll is also coming up from Triple-A. Unlike Benschoter, Moll has been in the big leagues before. But unlike Benschoter, Moll has not had any success at all in 2025. In his three big league outings this year the lefty had an ERA of 18.00. In his 20 outings with Louisville this season he has an ERA of 7.79.
