The Cincinnati Reds designated their outfielder for assignment over the weekend to clear space for some roster additions. However, they were unable to sneak him through waivers, as the Seattle Mariners claimed the outfielder, who is now headed to Seattle.
A graduate of West Point, the 27-year-old was one of the standout stories of spring training. He earned praise for his speed, defensive abilities, and strong plate discipline. Known for his selfless, team-oriented mindset, Hurtubise’s journey to the big leagues is both admirable and inspiring.
The Cincinnati Reds designated Jacob Hurtubise for assignment over the weekend to make room for a couple of new additions. Unfortunately, the Reds were unable to pass Hurtubise through waivers. The outfielder was claimed by the Seattle Mariners and is headed to the Emerald City.
Hurtubise, a West Point graduate, was the feel-good story of spring training. The outfielder was lauded for his speed and defense, and he knows the strike zone very well. Hurtubise was regarded for his team-first attitude, and his ascension to the major leagues is truly an inspiring story.
But when you make it to the big leagues, your backstory can’t be your only carrying tool. Hurtubise showcased his talents during spring training and broke camp with the big-league ball club, but once the 2025 season got underway, he fell off the map rather quickly.

Reds lose outfielder Jacob Hurtubise to the Mariners
Hurtubise lasted a few weeks, but once Austin Hays returned from the injured list, he became dispensable. The Reds optioned Hurtubise back to the minors, and outside of his on-base percentage, the 26-year-old’s numbers were nothing to write home about. Hurtubise was hitting just .144/.336/.186 when the Reds DFA’d him last week.
He’ll now get a shot with a team that Reds fans know all too well. The Reds and Mariners have been frequent trade partners over the years, and numerous fan-favorites have played for both organizations.
The Reds traded Eugenio Suárez and Jesse Winker to the Mariners prior to the 2022 season in exchange for Jake Fraley, Justin Dunn, Brandon Williamson, and Connor Phillips. Cincinnati and Seattle executed another trade later that summer when Luis Castillo was dealt as part of a blockbuster deal that brought Noelvi Marte and Edwin Arroyo back to the Queen City.
Hurtubise still has minor-league options remaining and in all likelihood, will be sent to the Mariners’ Triple-A affiliate in Tacoma. Knowing that offense is one of Seattle’s biggest weaknesses, it’s somewhat surprising to see them take a flier on a light-hitting outfielder like Hurtubise. Nevertheless, Hurtubise’s speed and defense could be tremendous assets at T-Mobile Park later this season, and Reds fans undoubtedly wish him well with his new organization.
