Cardinals demote 25-year-old pitcher amid first team struggles

The St. Louis Cardinals made an official move regarding their No. 10 prospect, Michael McGreevy.

McGreevy will be called up to start against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Although reports earlier in the weekend indicated he would be making a spot start, the team confirmed the decision by optioning 25-year-old pitcher  to the minors.

“RHP Michael McGreevy has been recalled from Memphis (AAA),” the team announced. “RHP Roddery Muñoz has been optioned to Memphis.”

Roddery Muñoz is in his second MLB season and has struggled to find his footing. As a rookie last year, he posted a 6.53 ERA over 18 appearances, including starts for the Miami Marlins. His performance hasn’t improved much this season with the Cardinals, as he’s pitched to a 9.53 ERA over five outings, recording a 7-to-3 strikeout-to-walk ratio in just 5 2/3 innings.

Meanwhile, 24-year-old Michael McGreevy has generated plenty of buzz within the Cardinals’ farm system. He’s already made one major league appearance this season, delivering 5 2/3 scoreless innings. In Triple-A, he’s been impressive, posting a 2.78 ERA across 11 starts. McGreevy also turned heads in Spring Training, with many fans hoping he’d make the Opening Day roster. Though he didn’t crack the team back then, he’s now getting another opportunity at the big league level—with a challenging start against the Dodgers on deck.
