The Reds announced they’ve signed experienced player to a one-year Major League deal, just a few days after he entered free agency by exercising his opt-out clause.
The experienced pitcher appeared in seven minor league games for the Reds in 2025 while recovering from Tommy John surgery. But when his contract’s opt-out clause came up on June 1st, there wasn’t room for him in Cincinnati’s starting rotation. As a result, he exercised the opt-out, hoping to land a starting role with another major league team—only for a rotation spot to unexpectedly open up in Cincinnati right after.
Unfortunately, that’s the downside of the situation.
Hunter Greene is heading back to the injured list after re-aggravating the same groin injury that sidelined him briefly last month. The issue resurfaced during his five-inning outing last night and was the reason he was pulled from the game. It’s now been deemed serious enough to require more time for recovery.
Once again, we’ve got a Miley-related Reds photo that isn’t Wade Miley—just another chance for AI to look dumber than me (though “hopefully” is doing a lot of heavy lifting there).
As for the team’s overall depth, having Wade Miley in the mix adds some much-needed veteran stability to a rotation short on big league mileage. Just yesterday, we pointed out how thin the Reds’ depth chart is, noting that none of Greene, Andrew Abbott, Nick Lodolo, or even Nick Martinez has logged a full MLB season as a starter without some sort of caveat—whether due to injuries or bullpen stints.
So, keeping Miley around rather than seeing him land elsewhere is ultimately a positive. It’s the kind of “good problem” a team won’t mind figuring out later—if he can tap back into something closer to his pre–Tommy John self. And that need becomes even more pressing with the latest development: Rhett Lowder has been placed on the 60-day injured list with an oblique injury, meaning he’s out for an extended stretch—possibly the rest of the season. That takes another option off the table and leaves the Reds’ rotation depth looking shakier.
Miley won’t be on the mound for today’s series finale against the Brewers, but expect to see him starting a game for the Reds during the upcoming turn through the rotation.
