Oklahoma Sooners beat multiple elite programs to land massive commitment for top talented defensive weapon

Oklahoma Sooners head coach Brent Venables clearly has a preferred profile when it comes to defensive players. While he’s now the head coach, it’s important to remember that he’s also one of college football’s top defensive strategists over the past decade.

In 2025, Venables will once again be directly overseeing the defense after orchestrating a top-tier unit in 2024. When evaluating talent for his scheme, he prioritizes players who are highly athletic, intelligent, and adaptable. He especially values those who can contribute in multiple roles—highlighting the importance of the “cheetah” position in his system.

Now, the Sooners are in contention for a recruit who seems tailor-made for Venables’ defense. Oklahoma just cracked the top five for a promising 2026 prospect, Niko Jandreau.

Jandreau, a three-star safety from Hamilton High School in Chandler, Arizona, stands about 6’1” and weighs 185 pounds. He’s recognized for his versatility, athleticism, and strong instincts in coverage.

His recruitment is gaining momentum, with 11 Power Four offers, including from programs like Oklahoma, USC, Arizona State, Boise State, Iowa State, Missouri, San Diego State, and Washington. He’s planning official visits to Oklahoma, Washington, Iowa State, San Diego State, and Oregon State—though the latter hasn’t extended an offer yet.

This week, Jandreau announced his top five: Oklahoma, USC, Missouri, Washington, and Georgia Tech. Proximity to home may give USC an edge, but Oklahoma’s strong defensive tradition and NFL development track record could make a powerful impression.
