On Monday, the St. Louis Cardinals made a disappointing decision by optioning their No. 10 prospect, Michael McGreevy, back to Triple-A. McGreevy had just made his season debut in Sunday’s doubleheader, delivering an impressive 5.2 innings of one-hit, scoreless relief after Andre Pallante lasted only 3.1 innings against the powerful Mets lineup. Despite the strong performance, McGreevy is returning to Memphis, where he currently holds a 4.08 ERA this season.

Since beginning his professional career, the 24-year-old right-hander has actually found more success in the Majors than in the minors, where he holds a 4.13 ERA. In his rookie season last year, McGreevy impressed with a 1.96 ERA over 23 innings at the big-league level. Given his recent performance, one might assume he had secured a spot in the starting rotation—but it seems the Cardinals’ front office sees things differently.
