Roster changes continue at a rapid pace for West Virginia football.
Wednesday proved to be an eventful day for the Mountaineers, who bolstered their team by adding two experienced defensive players and a seasoned offensive lineman. However, it wasn’t long before even more recruiting news surfaced.
WVU Head Coach Rich Rodriguez and Defensive Coordinator Zac Alley secured a commitment from a lesser-known defensive back coming from the junior college ranks. Gray, who played at Dodge City Community College in Kansas, redshirted his freshman year and emerged as a key part of the defense in 2024. Last season, he recorded 32 tackles, five pass deflections, and forced three fumbles.

Kaleb Gray received multiple offers from Group of Five programs and recently picked up Big 12 offers from both Kansas and Kansas State—two schools located in the same state where he’s been playing JUCO football.
Unlike most of WVU’s recent additions to the secondary, Gray arrives in Morgantown with three years of collegiate eligibility remaining. He and Appalachian State transfer Nick Taylor are the only non-high school newcomers this offseason with more than one season left to play.
This suggests that Gray is being brought in as a developmental player and added depth, rather than as someone expected to contribute immediately—unless he delivers a standout performance during fall camp. He becomes the 12th addition to a revamped WVU secondary this offseason, with all coming via the transfer portal or junior college ranks.
