The Denver Broncos have strengthened their defensive backfield by signing Joshua Pickett, a former Duke University standout, as an undrafted free agent. While Pickett didn’t generate major headlines during his college career, his steady improvement, reliable play, and leadership qualities position him as a strong candidate to contribute at the next level.
Consistent Performer Over Three Seasons
Throughout his time at Duke, Pickett displayed a pattern of dependable performance and steady growth. In 2023, he appeared in all 13 games and started once against Virginia, finishing the season with 17 tackles, an interception, and two pass breakups. He primarily served as a rotational player and a valuable asset on special teams.
Pickett’s most impactful year came in 2022, when he started nine games and became a key presence in Duke’s secondary. That season, he recorded 41 tackles (including one for a loss), one sack, and a team-leading seven pass breakups. His disciplined, smart play helped limit big plays while still disrupting opposing offenses.
As a freshman in 2021, he played in 11 games and contributed five tackles, laying the groundwork for his collegiate career.
Respected for Leadership and Academics
Pickett’s influence extended off the field as well. In 2022, he received Duke’s Mike Suglia Award, which honors a second-year player who exemplifies leadership, commitment, and selflessness—qualities Pickett was known for among teammates and coaches.
Academically, Pickett also stood out. He earned his degree in public policy in December 2024, along with a certificate in markets and management, showcasing his ability to juggle academics and athletics at a high level.
Role with the Broncos
With Denver, Pickett brings versatility as a defensive back who can contribute on special teams and compete for depth roles at either safety or cornerback. His track record suggests he’s a quick learner with the adaptability needed to succeed as an undrafted free agent.
Although the transition to the NFL is a big step, Pickett’s development, leadership, and work ethic give him a solid foundation to make an impact in Denver. For a team focused on adding dependable depth, he’s a promising fit.
