Just weeks after former UC Irvine forward Devin Tillis committed to Ryan Odom and the Virginia Cavaliers, there’s renewed excitement in Charlottesville with the addition of a major international talent—German standout .
At 19, Grünloh had begun appearing on 2025 NBA Draft boards as a possible second-round selection, but he’s chosen instead to suit up for UVA for at least one season. A key player for RASTA Vechta in Germany’s top professional league, the Bundesliga, Grünloh also has experience representing Germany at the youth international level.
In his most recent season with RASTA Vechta, the 6’11” forward started all 33 games, averaging 8.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per contest. He shot nearly 48% from the field and over 35% from three-point range, all while sharing the court with former Virginia Cavalier Jayden Gardner.

The footage highlights just how fluid and confident Johann Grünloh is both near the rim and at the top of the key, where he excels at setting screens before rolling to the basket or popping out for a three-point shot.
Defensively, Grünloh is a standout shot blocker—he recently made history in the Basketball Champions League by recording eight blocks in a single game. His rebounding skills are strong, and with a 7-foot wingspan, he’s capable of contesting shots anywhere on the court, from the paint to the perimeter. One of the most impressive aspects of his game is his ability to run the floor—an uncommon trait for someone his size—which should prove to be a major asset for the Cavaliers.
Odom and the Wahoos have found their starting center and will look to fill out the roster with a backup center, one more forward, and maybe one or two more scoring guards. Stay tuned as we will have it all here at Streaking The Lawn.
