Cardinals Predicted To Make Surprising Addition This Summer

The St. Louis Cardinals clearly didn’t have the kind of 2024 season they were hoping for.

While the team did show some improvement, they still fell short of making the playoffs. On the bright side, they’ll have the No. 5 overall pick in the 2025 MLB June Amateur Draft as a result.

Last year, St. Louis used its top draft selection to pick infielder JJ Wetherholt at No. 7. According to Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter, the Cardinals may go the infield route again this year, predicting they’ll select Wake Forest shortstop Marek Houston with the fifth pick.

“No. 5. St. Louis Cardinals: SS Marek Houston, Wake Forest,” Reuter wrote. “Houston earned the starting shortstop role at Wake Forest as a freshman thanks to his strong defensive skills, and his offensive production has since caught up. He’s currently slashing .344/.453/.595 with 11 doubles, 10 home runs, 48 RBIs, and 16 steals over 42 games. His all-around game and high floor make him a likely top-10 pick.”

Those stats are certainly impressive. Although the Cardinals already have 23-year-old Masyn Winn penciled in as their shortstop of the future, adding a talented prospect like Houston could still be a smart move. We’ll find out soon enough who St. Louis decides to take.
