Florida Gators safety has officially entered the transfer portal after missing Thursday’s 4 p.m. deadline to sign his scholarship contract, sources confirmed. His exit marks the Gators’ first departure during the spring transfer window.
Smith, a redshirt freshman, appeared in five games last season and recorded five tackles and one pass breakup while maintaining his redshirt. This spring, he had been filling in as the first-team strong safety during Bryce Thornton’s injury recovery and earned praise for his leadership and improvement.
Thornton recently commended Smith, saying, “He’s out there making calls for everybody. I’m really proud of him for what he’s done.”
Originally a four-star recruit from Sumner High in Riverview, Florida, Smith was ranked the No. 18 safety in the 2024 class. Though he played quarterback in high school, Florida recruited him for his athleticism and long-term potential as a defensive back. GM Jacob LaFrance even labeled him “the most underrated player” in Florida’s class.

Smith’s departure adds depth challenges to the Gators’ safety group, though the team still returns key players like Thornton and Jordan Castell, along with top recruits Lagonza Hayward and Drake Stubbs. The move also opens up a roster spot as Florida works to stay under the 85-man scholarship limit.
The spring transfer window remains open until April 30, giving Florida time to find reinforcements. Smith will have four years of eligibility at his next stop.
