UNEXPECTED NEWS: Cardinals Cut Ties With $75 Million All-Star Via Trade

St. Louis Cardinals ace Sonny Gray continued his strong 2025 campaign on Monday, tossing seven scoreless innings against the Houston Astros and boosting his record to 3-0 with a 3.13 ERA. The Cardinals have won all four of his starts so far — but how much longer will he be pitching in a St. Louis uniform?

As July’s trade deadline approaches, Gray could become a hot commodity for teams in need of starting pitching. While it’s unlikely St. Louis would deal him within the division — such as to the rival Cubs — American League clubs like the Astros or Red Sox could emerge as serious suitors. If the Cardinals’ current .500 record slips and they fall out of contention in the crowded NL Central, they may be more inclined to entertain trade offers.

The Red Sox, in particular, present an interesting fit. With a battered rotation and Tanner Houck struggling, Boston is thin on reliable arms behind breakout lefty Garrett Crochet. Add in their deep farm system and young MLB-ready talent — names like Ceddanne Rafaela and Triston Casas — and they have the assets to make a compelling offer.

Financially, Boston may not balk at Gray’s contract. He’s owed $25 million this season and $35 million in 2026, with a $30 million club option for 2027, per Spotrac. Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has shown a willingness to spend, which could make Boston a serious player if Gray becomes available.

Of course, if the Cardinals remain in the thick of the NL Central race — a division where all but the Pirates look competitive — they’ll likely keep their veteran ace. But if their playoff hopes dim, expect Gray’s name to surface in trade rumors, especially in connection with Boston.
