West Virginia redshirt freshman defensive lineman announced Tuesday morning on X that he is entering the transfer portal.
“First and foremost, I want to thank God for the blessings, guidance, and strength he has given me throughout my journey. I also want to thank West Virginia for many lessons and the opportunity, but with that said I am entering my name in the transfer portal.”
Makai Byerson, a redshirt freshman defensive lineman at West Virginia, has entered the transfer portal. A member of WVU’s 2024 recruiting class, Byerson chose the Mountaineers over several programs, including Boston College, Duke, Kentucky, Pitt, Tennessee, and Virginia Tech, among others.

In his senior year at Manchester High School in Midlothian, Virginia, he put up impressive numbers—103 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, six sacks, seven pass breakups, and two interceptions.
Byerson saw limited action during his true freshman season, appearing in just one game against UAlbany in Week 2, where he recorded a single tackle in a 49-14 win. He will enter the portal with four years of eligibility remaining.
