UNC basketball gets major transfer portal win with 5-star center commitment

The transfer portal has been somewhat unpredictable during its first week and a half, but the North Carolina Tar Heels have finally started to gain some momentum. Earlier this week, they landed their first portal addition with a commitment from West Virginia freshman sharpshooter Jonathan Powell. Now, UNC has made a crucial frontcourt move by adding former Arizona center Henri Veesaar.

Veesaar, a 7-footer, recently visited Chapel Hill and is ranked as the No. 2 center in the transfer portal by 247Sports, earning a four-star transfer rating with a .9500 score.

In his sophomore season with Arizona, Veesaar posted averages of 9.4 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game, despite starting only five games. He appeared in 37 contests and averaged 20.8 minutes per outing.

A skilled big who can score and defend the rim was a glaring need for Hubert Davis’s squad last season. While Ven-Allen Lubin showed improvement later in the year, it took him a while to become a consistent contributor, and no one on the team averaged more than a block per game—leaving UNC’s interior defense lacking.

BREAKING: Arizona transfer Henri Veesaar has committed to North Carolina. The 7-foot Estonian ranks among the top bigs in the portal and is a key frontcourt addition for Hubert Davis and the Tar Heels.

Veesaar is expected to make an immediate impact alongside highly regarded incoming freshman Caleb Wilson, forming a promising frontcourt duo.

UNC is still active in the transfer market as head coach Hubert Davis and assistant Jim Tanner continue their pursuit of talent to bolster the 2025-26 roster and return the program to national prominence. Landing a top-tier transfer like Veesaar is a big step in the right direction.
