Iowa Hawkeyes receive massive update regarding star QB

The Iowa Hawkeyes got some encouraging news from their transfer quarterback on Thursday.

Gronowski, a transfer from South Dakota State, revealed that he’s begun throwing again after undergoing shoulder surgery this offseason, according to Tyler Tachman of the Des Moines Register.

The Hawkeyes made headlines by securing one of the top quarterbacks available in the transfer portal. In January, Mark Gronowski chose to undergo shoulder surgery, a move that sidelined him for spring practices. He isn’t expected to participate in on-field activities with the team until June.

However, Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz has noted that Gronowski’s recovery is “a little ahead” of schedule.

“The biggest area (of caution) right now is just to make sure nobody runs into him or he doesn’t fall down,” Ferentz said. “So just being cautious with that with him. But the recovery’s going great. Everything’s right on schedule. He’s probably a little bit ahead, that type of deal.”

Mark Gronowski joins Iowa after an outstanding four-year run at South Dakota State, where he established himself as one of the most productive quarterbacks in FCS football. He threw for 10,330 yards, completing 63% of his passes with 93 touchdowns to just 20 interceptions.

But Gronowski wasn’t just a passer—he added 1,765 rushing yards and 37 touchdowns on the ground, making him a true dual-threat. With that kind of experience and production, he now steps into the Big Ten with a proven track record under center.

His return to throwing is a major positive for the Hawkeyes, who have struggled offensively in recent seasons. Iowa is hoping that a healthy Gronowski can help turn things around and bring new life to their offense.
