Virginia men’s basketball has secured its fourth transfer of the offseason, as VCU freshman Martin Carrere announced his commitment to the Cavaliers via social media on Wednesday, April 9.
Carrere, a 6’8”, 180-pound guard/forward from Pontonx-sur-l’Adour, France, redshirted last season at VCU and will arrive in Charlottesville with four years of eligibility remaining. Before coming to the U.S., he gained significant experience in both amateur and professional basketball in France.
He played for the French national team at the 2024 FIBA U18 EuroBasket Tournament, where he averaged 6.7 points in just over 16 minutes per game, shooting an impressive 41.9% from three. His standout performance came against Denmark, posting 11 points, five rebounds, three assists, a steal, and a block in only 17 minutes.

Carrere also competed in France’s top youth professional league, the Betclic Elite U21, where he averaged 8.6 points per game and hit nearly 39% from deep during the 2023–24 season. He later helped lead the Next Generation Paris U18 squad to a title at the Adidas Next Generation Paris Tournament, shooting 57.1% from beyond the arc.
With Ryan Odom now leading the UVA program after departing VCU, many expected some Rams players to follow him. Although freshmen Brandon Jennings and Luke Bamgboye entered the portal and visited UVA, neither has committed. Jennings has since announced he’ll return to VCU, while Bamgboye’s status remains undecided.
Carrere is currently the only VCU transfer to follow Odom to Virginia, though the Cavaliers also flipped four-star center Silas Barksdale—originally committed to VCU—to join fellow Virginia native and four-star guard Chance Mallory in UVA’s 2025 freshman class.
Carrere joins a trio of other transfers: Toledo’s Sam Lewis, North Dakota State’s Jacari White, and Oklahoma’s Duke Miles. Alongside returning guard Elijah Gertrude, that gives UVA seven scholarship players for next season. Odom and his staff are expected to stay active in the transfer portal, with a focus on experienced frontcourt players.
