Reports indicate that the Toronto Blue Jays have reached an agreement with Dylan Cease, a move that could set the tone for this offseason’s starting-pitching market.
One of the next starters expected to draw significant interest is Ranger Suárez of the Philadelphia Phillies. After a standout season, Suárez is believed to be seeking a deal of at least $150 million in free agency.
Jackson Roberts of Fastball OnSi reveal that Suárez would land a substantial six-year, $171 million contract with the San Francisco Giants.
“Because he gives up a reasonably high number of fly balls, Suárez could thrive in a big ballpark, and the San Francisco Giants have long been a paradise for pitchers with that batted ball profile,” Roberts wrote. “Plus, we know this Giants front office has no aversion to big-money deals.”
The Giants need to add pitching to their roster if they want to compete with the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West. The money shouldn’t be a problem this offseason, so a deal like this could make a lot of sense.
There’s a chance the Giants get caught up chasing a superstar like Kyle Tucker in free agency, but finding a deal with an ace like Suárez makes a lot more sense.
