The Philadelphia Phillies are facing the possibility of losing two major free agents this offseason. Star pitcher Ranger Suárez is among the top arms available, and the team appears willing to let him walk.
However, the Phillies cannot afford to part ways with Kyle Schwarber. His expected price tag, though, may make things difficult for them.
Zach Mentz of Cleveland.com recently reveal that Schwarber will secure a significant four-year, $120 million contract in free agency this winter.
“Schwarber blasted a career-high 56 home runs this season, which led the National League, and a career-high 132 RBI, which led all of MLB,” Mentz wrote. “The lefty masher is going to get paid. Would Philly really let Schwarber walk? He’ll have plenty of interested suitors.”
Beyond the Phillies, the Cincinnati Reds, Chicago Cubs, and Boston Red Sox all appear to be logical potential landing spots for the slugger.
Cincinnati is Schwarber’s hometown, and he has hinted that he’d be open to joining the Reds if the financial offer were strong enough. However, the team’s front office typically doesn’t hand out contracts of that size.
Meanwhile, the Cubs are expected to lose Kyle Tucker in free agency, making Schwarber an appealing replacement in their lineup. Although he isn’t an outfielder, his elite power makes him a valuable addition regardless of position.
The Red Sox could slide Schwarber in as their designated hitter if they want to close the gap on the top teams in the American League.
