The Boston Red Sox fielded a highly skilled team this year, but they fell short of contending for the World Series as many had anticipated, ultimately finishing third in the American League East.
Looking ahead, the Red Sox could potentially lose Alex Bregman to free agency. Bregman has opted out of his contract, entering free agency for the second consecutive season. Jim Bowden of The Athletic recently estimated that Bregman could secure a massive $182 million contract this winter, an amount that would likely be manageable for Boston’s payroll.
Meanwhile, Matt Johnson of Sportsnaut reveal that the Red Sox will re-sign third baseman during this offseason’s free agency period.
“Given what happened with Rafael Devers and Mookie Betts, letting Alex Bregman depart in MLB free agency feels inexcusable for the Boston Red Sox,” Johnson wrote. “Other teams will certainly get involved, especially the Detroit Tigers, but Bregman has been pretty open about his desire to remain in Boston. Other clubs will drive the ultimate contract price up, but the Red Sox keep their All-Star third baseman, and Bregman finishes his career playing at Fenway Park.”
Bregman should be the team’s top priority this winter.
He was one of their best players this season, so he’s owed a big contract in free agency. There are bound to be a lot of suitors in his sweepstakes, but the Red Sox need to do whatever they can to bring him back.
